Digital media and political involvement

From September 2007 to September 2010
Funding Institution: Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS) and Gobierno de Aragón
Grant Number: SEJ2007-60082

Research questions

To what extent, how and by whom is the internet used for political purposes? Does online engagement mirror offline modes of political participation or is it something else? Is it reinforcing previous participation or mobilizing citizens that were apathetic? How do political organizations use the internet for mobilization and to what extent is it effective? What effect does internet use have on political attitudes, political behavior and political equality?

Data

The team won the competitive module of the CIS, 2007 and designed an ad-hoc survey that is now publicly available (CIS 2736, www.cis.es ). Qualitative data (focus groups) as well as cases of mobilization processes have also been analyzed. Aragón’s regional government has been interested in this project and has financed part of the qualitative data gathering.
