This paper analyses how the European Union (EU), European actors and subjects were presented in the national mainstream media of three EU member states during the last economic crisis. I explore an original random sample of 217 newspaper articles that explicitly refer to the economic crisis, the recession and the austerity polices, published by 15 leading newspapers of France, Spain, and the UK between 2008 and 2014. The articles contain political claims that were either initiated or addresses to the EU and European political actors, or discussed European subjects.
