The Institut de Govern i Politiques Públiques and the Department of Political Science and Public Law of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) invite applications for a four- year fully funded PhD position to develop a doctoral dissertation in Political Science, with a focus on the analysis of political attitudes and behavior.
The PhD position is embedded in the research project: Political Change in Spain: Populism, Feminism and New Conflicts / Cambio Politico en España: Populismo, Feminismo y Nuevos Ejes de Conflicto? (POLCHAN)
The project is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities. The key goal of the POLCHAN project is to unravel from an individual and longitudinal perspective the dynamics underlying the transformation and change of the political attitudes and behavior of Spanish citizens between 2010 and 2020, with a special focus on the appearance of new dimensions of political competition. The project is particularly interested in the causes and consequences of populist and feminist attitudes. The project takes a quantitative methodological approach based in the analysis of longitudinal survey data with the support of survey experiments and data obtained from social media.
The group and institutional setting
The PhD candidate will work in cooperation with the PIs of the project, Eva Anduiza and Guillem Rico, and the researches of the project and this group. He or she will be able to participate in the rich academic life and activities of the research group on Democracy, Elections and Citizenship, IGOP and the Department, with opportunities to develop his/her own research network and to do research stays abroad.
This is a full-time position. The main responsibility of the candidate will be to work on his/her own dissertation in an area related to the research project. Comparative projects, or projects focusing on cases different than Spain are welcome. The candidate will be expected also to participate in other scientific collaborations within the research group. Candidates will also be able to contribute to the Department teaching tasks for a maximum of 60 hours per year.
Candidates should fulfill the requirements to enroll in the UAB PPIR PhD Program. An MA degree in a social science discipline is required. Candidates are expected to be motivated to pursue an academic career and should have a strong interest in political behavior as well as a solid training in quantitative methods. Good working knowledge of English is expected. Knowledge of Spanish will be an asset.
Calendar and salary
The starting date of the position is between May and September, 2019. Conditional on annual evaluations of PhD progress, funding is guaranteed for 4 years, with a gross annual salary of 16,500€ approx.
